May 15 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
Come and celebrate the release of the resident Cripple Creek Wild Donkey Herd from their winter grazing grounds into the city. This is an annual event and the donkeys are very excited to leave their pasture for the greener grasses throughout the community. The release takes place annually on May 15th at 11:00 a.m. This year the Gold Camp Victorian Society is providing a living history reenactment of Teddy Roosevelt, during the release. President Roosevelt was instrumental in improving the working conditions for the donkeys in the mining industry. Some of the Cripple Creek donkeys are decedents from the donkeys that worked in the mining industry.
This year we also welcome Calypso and Salsa to the herd. They were recently adopted and will join the rest of the herd as they wonder the streets of Cripple Creek this summer.
